Categories are the labels your money is sorted into. They become the lines on your reports. You'll find them in Settings. They're grouped by type, like Income and Operating expenses, with how many transactions use each one. To add one, type its name in New category. Choose where it goes under, then click Add category. It's in the category list on Review right away. To change a name, click Rename, type the new one, and click Save. Reports use the new name everywhere, even for past months. Not using one? Click Hide. It comes off the list on Review, and past transactions keep it. To bring a hidden one back, check Show hidden at the top. Then click Show next to it, and it's back in the list. Built-in categories, like Other expense, can be hidden but not renamed, because Balancivo relies on those names.

Good to know
- Only an owner can add, rename, or hide categories. Bookkeepers can see the list. If a bookkeeper needs a new category, an owner can add it.
- A renamed category shows its new name on every report, including past months.
- Hiding doesn't change any history. Past transactions keep the category, and reports still show it.
- Built-in categories (Other income, Other expense, Owner contributions, Owner draws, Transfer between accounts, and Credit card payment) can be hidden but not renamed. Balancivo relies on those names.
- You can't add two categories with the same name under the same heading.
- Account numbers, sub-accounts, descriptions, and importing a chart are on the Chart of accounts page. Click the Chart of accounts link in this section to get there.
- To add a whole ready-made set at once, see Chart of accounts templates.
